Dear District 9 Residents & Friends,
First, I would like to take this opportunity to wish each and everyone of you a safe and happy Thanksgiving.

As many of you know, bringing more attractive and modern modes of mass transit to District 9 is one of the major initiatives that I have laid out during my first six months in office.

On Saturday, November 14th, I attended VIA's SmartWaySA Northside meeting, where VIA discussed their plans for developing a long range comprehensive transportation plan for San Antonio.  The plan will establish policy structure, set forth strategies, and provide a framework for directing future transit investments in our area.

In February of next year, my office will be hosting a public meeting, in conjunction with VIA, to take this initiative a step further and examine what mass transit options would be attractive to District 9 residents in order to increase their ridership.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact my office if you ever need any assistance.

Respectfully,
Elisa Chan
City Council Votes to Expanded Military Lighting Overlay District
At the last City Council meeting, the Council unanimously voted to expand the City's Military Lighting Overlay District (MLOD).  This move by the City Council is part of an ongoing effort to limit the impact of outdoor lighting on night time military training operations at Camp Bullis.  The expanded MLOD will rezone all properties within 5 miles of Camp Bullis to include an overlay zoning district that places additional standards for outdoor lighting.  This Council action was taken in accord with the findings of the Camp Bullis Joint Land Use Study.  All previously installed, lawfully existing lighting will be considered legally nonconforming, and will not be required to be altered.  To view an illustration of what type of light fixtures will be considered acceptable and unacceptable, please click here.

SAWS Awards Education Grant to San Antonio Christian High School
On Monday, November 16th, San Antonio Water System (SAWS) awarded a $2,500 mini-grant to San Antonio Christian High School for a project that will assess water quality on the school's campus.  On behalf of SAWS, Councilwoman Chan awarded the grant check to the winning teacher as well as the school's principal and superintendent.  The project will evaluate the impact of the school's groundwater on the Edwards Aquifer, learning about geology and water testing, as well as factors on-site that might contribute to water quality.  The participating high school students will also reach out to lower grade levels to involve them in clean water education and pollution prevention.  San Antonio Christian School was founded in the 1960s as Grace Bible College Prepatory School and became known by its current name in 1972, when it was located on Blanco Road.  Since moving to the new campus, located on Redland Road, North of Loop 1604, San Antonio Christian School has grown to 1,155 students.
